Did you know which hand the wedding ring goes on? Well, it turns out that there are many different cultural traditions when it comes to which hand the wedding ring is worn on. There are also several reasons why people will wear their rings on which finger. In some Christian denominations, both men and women will wear their wedding ring on their left hand. However, in some Christian denominations only men will wear their wedding ring on the left hand.
Most people in Western countries wear their wedding rings on their left hands because of a Latin phrase which means “The heart has its reasons which reason does not know”. This is why most Latin Christians choose to wear the wedding ring on the left hand which corresponds with which finger it is worn on. However, sometimes even within Christian denominations there are differences between which finger or which hand is preferred when wearing wedding rings. For example, Orthodox Christians are required by Church authorities to have their weddings performed after sunset so they tend to refer to this rule when choosing which finger or which hand the wedding ring should worn on. Therefore, Orthodox Christians are encouraged to wear their wedding rings on the right hand which corresponds with which finger it is worn on.
Likewise, Roman Catholics are also required by Church authorities not to have their weddings performed before sunset which means they should choose which hand or which finger based this rule. However, in some Roman Catholic churches people are allowed to get married at any time of day so they can refer to which hand or which finger based on other factors instead.
However, if you are looking for a tradition which involves more ancient times then ancient Greeks believed that each finger is linked with one of the planets in our solar system and if you wore your wedding ring on a certain finger it would bring you luck associated with that planet (e.g., wearing your wedding ring on your left hand which corresponds with which finger it is worn on will bring you Moon luck which means good fortune).
If you are looking for a more elaborate tradition which involves which hand or which finger then traditional wedding rings go on the right hand which corresponds with which finger it is worn on because of an ancient belief that the fourth finger of the right hand contained a vein called “Vena amoris” or “The Vein of Love”. If this vein was cut then the person wearing the wedding ring would no longer have love in their life. Because of this many people chose to wear their wedding rings on which ever fingers they associated with love so they could protect them against being cut.
Regardless if you are looking for which hand which finger which tradition to follow, it is generally a good idea to consult with your partner before making a decision which could potentially have a big impact on which hand which finger which tradition you feel most comfortable following.
