The number one question people ask related to weddings it actually pretty interesting. Some would think it is related to the location or the start times and even who the people are however the one question everyone wants to know is ” What should I wear to a wedding?”
First off, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when attending a wedding. The bride most likely has picked out what she would like everyone to wear especially if it is not casual. So this is the number one reason you do not want to go outside of that box because she has probably worked really hard on planning the perfect day and she wants everything to be perfect for this special occasion. The second thing is, you do not want to go over the top with your outfit. If you are the bride getting married check out our blog on wedding dresses and if you are the groom getting married check out our blog on men’s suits.
The idea of a wedding day is to be yourself and feel comfortable as well as look your best for this special occasion. So now that we know those two things let’s talk about what to wear and how to pick it out.
If you are the groom, it is okay to be a little more relaxed about what you wear. You can get away with wearing a nice pair of jeans and a button-down shirt or even dress it up by wearing khakis with a blazer. For women, you want to make sure that your outfit is not too short or too revealing because this is a time for you to show respect and also be yourself. You want to avoid anything too sexy so not only will the bride be happy with your outfit choice but so will others as well because it is considered bad etiquette. But at the same time, you do not want to wear something that looks like you are going to a funeral either. So what to do?
The best thing to remember is when in doubt dress for the occasion. If you are still not sure about your outfit choice make sure that it has a nice hemline and nothing too short or too tight. You also want to make sure that it fits the venue because if the wedding location is a country club then you want to make sure that you are not wearing something too casual. The most important part is to feel comfortable in what you are wearing and if possible find out where the location is so you can dress for the occasion by either dressing up or down. If it’s somewhere really nice then you want to make sure that your outfit reflects that but if the wedding is not formal then you can dress down for the venue. Most importantly, do not stress about what you are wearing and whatever you choose to make sure that it is your best self and whatever makes you feel confident and good about yourself. Enjoy the day and celebrate the wedding of two people who love each other very much!
As a wedding guest, an appropriate outfit means a sport coat and tie for men, a nice dress or skirt with a blouse for women. This can be loosened up depending on the location of the wedding. Semi-formal wear to weddings includes:
• Sport Coat and Tie
• Suit Jacket and Trousers with Dress Shirt
• Casual Dressy Outfit (Cargo Pants or Khakis, Collared Button-Down Shirt)
• Dressy Dresses, Separates, Blazers/Jackets with Skirt or Dress Pants
• Tea Length or Maxi Dress, Evening Skirt/Slacks with Top
• Suit Jacket and Skirt, Pantsuit with Shirt Outfit
FORMAL WEAR ATTIRE TO WEDDING
For formal weddings, the guest should dress in formal attire for women and men. Men should wear a tuxedo or dark suit with tie, dress shirt and shined shoes.
Casual wear is the perfect choice for guests attending a wedding, especially in areas where weather conditions could pose severe concerns. For your convenience, casual attire has been broken down into two broad categories: business casual and informal dress.
If you are uncertain whether or not your clothes qualify as casual dress, take the time to compare them to the list of examples. Additionally, you may want to reference the “What not to wear” section for more clarity.
If your clothes do not qualify as casual dress, it is best to ask the bride or groom if they prefer that you wear formal attire instead. The wedding invitation will usually indicate what type of dress is preferred by the couple getting married. Keep in mind that casual wear is generally appropriate until the end-of-evening festivities begin–then evening formal attire should be worn.
Just because business casual outfits are less formal than traditional office clothes does not mean they can’t look stylish and put together! A good place to start when selecting a business casual outfit is with separates such as a blazer, slacks, and a nice shirt. Stick with darker colors for maximum versatility, but if you are feeling daring don’t be afraid to opt for colors such as blue, green, or even pink!
Smartly tailored jeans are perfectly acceptable in business casual settings–just make sure the outfit still feels professional rather than laid-back by choosing dressy accessories. Finally, remember that comfortable shoes are essential when attempting to achieve an appropriate balance between formality and comfort.
If your clothes do not qualify as either business casual or casual wear then it is likely that they fall under the category of informal attire. As always, it is best to ask the bride or groom whether or not they would prefer you to wear casual or formal clothes.
It is important to remember that, as business casual attire, informal clothes should still be tailored and well-kept. If you are attending a wedding in the middle of summer it would not behoove you to wander around with wrinkled clothing and messy hair–even if you are technically allowed to look less than perfect! Remember that weddings mark one of the most important events in someone’s life; even if it is “just a wedding” the couple has put a lot of effort into ensuring everything goes as planned. Be sure to show them some appreciation by looking your best!
The first thing you want to avoid when deciding what to wear to a wedding is casual attire if the wedding is formal. Consider how ridiculous it would be to don your best sneakers and t-shirt for an evening wedding in a banquet hall! To put it simply, one of the most important things you can do when selecting what clothes to wear for a particular occasion is making sure different events are treated differently.
If you are attending a pre-noon wedding in a place where weather conditions could pose concerns such as rain or heat ensure that your outfit is appropriate for the climate. While sweatpants may not be entirely taboo at this kind of outdoor ceremony they certainly won’t keep you cool when temperatures start rising. On the other hand, wearing heavy boots in the middle of summer might cause you to sweat uncomfortably throughout the day.
Be considerate of the fact that weddings are usually formal occasions even if they do not begin as such. A wedding is a ritualized social event where people dress up in their best clothes to show respect for the couple getting married. This is especially important if you are attending an evening wedding or any other type of formal ceremony–your clothing should always be treated with care and attention!
White Tie Attire for Wedding Guests – If the invitation states white tie attire is required, men must wear tails and women must wear floor-length gowns – either long evening dresses or tea-length skirts – with formal accessories. Makeup should be subdued, hair styled up off of the face. White tie attire for weddings guests can easily be confused with black tie. White tie is much more formal and conservative than black tie, however. Men must wear tailcoats and women must wear floor-length gowns.
Dinner jackets, or tailcoats, are worn with white ties and wing collars in white or ivory. Formal black shoes are worn with all white tie attire for wedding guests.
Ladies’ formal evening wear is also called an evening gown, full-length dress, or floor-length dress. If you do not own a floor-length gown, tea-length dresses are acceptable as long as they fall below the knee. Women must wear long, formal gloves with floor-length gowns. Formal hats or headpieces are worn with all white tie attire for wedding guests.
They are usually the best option because they are comfortable, yet look classy. If you want to wear something more dressy than a cocktail dress, it is good to ask the bride what she would prefer before the wedding takes place. The only exception might be if you are in the wedding party (bridesmaid, groomsman, etc.), then you must follow the dress code of the bride and groom to avoid upstaging them. If you are not in the wedding party, then it is safest to ask questions beforehand.
Once you find out what kind of dress that she wants (or doesn’t want) you can go through your closet or look into stores for a new one. You want to make sure that it isn’t too short because it might be attracting attention away from the bride’s beauty, but you also don’t want to wear something so long that people will catch on fire if they come near you (unless someone does actually come near you).
As far as color goes, it’s best not to ignore all decorum and wear a neon pink flapper-style dress with a headdress of flowers. This might be an option if it’s Halloween, but not on any other day. A more moderate version of this is not to pick black for your dress because the bride might choose white; but if you are sure that she has chosen another color (royal blue or turquoise), then wearing a dark shade like navy blue will work nicely with the theme and colors of the event.
Additionally, shoes matter too. If you plan on dancing at all, make sure that they aren’t too tight – otherwise, you may end up with some blisters on your feet when it’s over. Sneakers are usually a good idea since most weddings take place in places where grass can be found. However, don’t go overboard and wear a pair of clear plastic sandals like the ones that come with Barbie dolls.
Just make sure not to overdo anything and keep it simple and classy. A wedding is an important event, so you want to look good without going overboard!
