When many people hear the word “wedding“, they automatically think of a bride and a groom. They do not realize that there is another person who plays a significant role in this event: the wedding photographer. Wedding photographers play an integral part in a couple’s special day, ensuring that every memory is captured while also providing excellent customer service to help ease any and all of the couple’s concerns.
People typically think of wedding photographers as a certain type; someone who likes to be behind the camera, living in solitude with only their thoughts for company. This is entirely false; wedding photographers are outgoing people that love interacting with others and the dynamic atmosphere that comes along with being a part of such an important day.
A wedding photographer’s work is divided into two very distinct and equally important parts: pre-wedding and post-wedding. The pre-wedding part of a job primarily consists of setting up the perfect shots (i.e., getting ready, ceremony, first dance, etc.) while also discussing with the couple what their needs and wants are. With today’s technology, part of a wedding photographer’s job also includes what is known as “destination scouting”. Destination scouting can be done through either extensive research or by actually traveling to the location in which the wedding will take place. This is extremely important because weddings have become such grand events that they now include people from all across the country (and sometimes, even out of the country). This means that wedding photos may be seen by multiple, diverse audiences and a photographer needs to be sure they can convey the beauty of this event in its entirety.
The post-wedding part of a job is where most of the work comes into play. This is due to the fact that a wedding photographer basically becomes a part of the family for an entire day. Not only does this involve taking photos at the reception and ensuring that all events are documented, but it also includes countless hours spent editing said photos. It is important to remember that storytelling photography (which is what wedding photography essentially turns into) requires a wedding photographer to take hundreds of photos at any wedding they work at. This is done so that the wedding photographer has a wide variety of pictures to choose from when it comes time to editing and curating them into something special for the couple. In order to stand out in this extremely competitive market, wedding photographers need to not only be well-versed in wedding photography basics (i.e., lighting, composition, posing) but also have excellent customer service skills to help make the wedding planning process as easy and stress-free as possible for the couple.
Once the wedding is over, a wedding photographer’s job does not end there. They must then go home and begin editing all of their wedding photos. In wedding photography, the editing process is incredibly important and can either make or break a wedding photographer’s reputation. It is not unheard of for wedding photographers to spend upwards of 100 hours editing wedding photos (especially if they have taken hundreds). This ensures that each and every wedding photo looks flawless and professional while also helping to create an album that is an accurate portrayal of the wedding day.
Throughout wedding photography, there are a number of obstacles that wedding photographers must face and overcome in order to maintain a successful business. The wedding industry is extremely competitive and it takes dedication and passion to be able to stand out from the rest. Wedding photographers also have the task of meeting deadlines with their clients while simultaneously creating stunning wedding albums (and eventual wedding products) for their couples’ approval. It is important for wedding photographers to create online portfolios as part of their marketing strategies so that potential customers can view past work before deciding who they want snapping pictures at their special event. There are also pros and cons when it comes to selling wedding photos as packages or individually; this is something wedding photographers must consider before beginning their wedding photography journey.
Wedding photographers work long hours, but they typically have a lot of leeway when it comes to how much (or how little) they want to work during wedding season. Wedding photographers can often times plan their wedding schedule around their personal lives so that they don’t feel overwhelmed with wedding photography. Many wedding photographers also enjoy the fact that wedding photos are forever keepsakes for couples, making the whole wedding process very rewarding in itself.
But overall, wedding photography is very competitive and must be taken seriously if you ever hope to succeed at it. Wedding photography is not something just anyone can do; it takes a special eye and lots of practice before you even begin thinking about wedding day pictures. It also requires great people skills in order to keep wedding couples happy and satisfied. Wedding photography can be a very rewarding career, but only if you have a passion for it.
Often times wedding photographers are considered some of the hardest working people in wedding planning because wedding photos typically last forever while wedding planning is over before it begins. Entire months will often go by before a wedding photographer gets an actual break from weddings so they can relax and recharge their batteries. The work ethic needed to succeed in wedding photography requires wedding photographers to be just as organized as wedding planners, along with having an artistic eye and strong attention to detail at all times. Business and marketing skills are important too since wedding photographers must sell themselves on their website or through word-of-mouth referrals if they hope to get wedding business.
Wedding photography is very rewarding insofar that wedding photos are a wedding couple’s gift to each other as well as family members and wedding guests who were able to attend the wedding in person. Wedding photographers should make it their goal to do wedding photography because they love it, not just for the money/paycheck. It will show through in wedding photos if the wedding photographer isn’t enthusiastic about taking them or lacks creativity with the shots they take. After all, weddings are supposed to be about celebrating!
Wedding photography is also a great way to expand your network and meet so many wedding vendors that you can get wedding discounts on their services. Wedding photographers are oftentimes friends with wedding planners, wedding venues, wedding caterers, wedding musicians, etc. because they work together so much during wedding season.
In the end, wedding photography is all about doing what you love and doing it well enough for people to want/pay for pictures of themselves or loved ones! It’s an art form in itself, just like painting or sculpting.
Marketing as a wedding photographer can be done in different ways, but wedding photographers typically have a website where their wedding photos are displayed and wedding packages are offered. Oftentimes wedding photographer websites will include blog posts to show how creative wedding photographers can be when it comes to wedding photo ideas for couples who want something original or unique at their wedding. Wedding photography is an art and you must treat it as one if you hope to succeed at making money from it!
Wedding photography is rewarding insofar that wedding photos last forever; they’re the only thing of the wedding that remains once all the confetti has been swept away. Wedding photographers must be just as organized as wedding planners and pay close attention to detail since people’s lives depend on pictures! You also need effective business and marketing skills to succeed in wedding photography since wedding photos are a wedding couple’s gift to each other and wedding guests who were able to attend the wedding in person. In the end, wedding photography is all about doing what you love and doing it well enough for people to want/pay for pictures of themselves or their loved ones! It’s an art form in itself, just like painting or sculpting.
The cost of a camera for a wedding photographer is anywhere from $2,000 – $10,000. The cost of wedding photography packages can vary if you have a wedding photographer charge by the hour or if wedding photographers offer wedding package deals that include digital wedding prints and other bonuses. Wedding photographers typically charge anywhere from $500 to upwards of $5,000 for wedding packages. As you can see being a wedding photographer is pretty expensive, but wedding photographers make up for that high cost of wedding photography equipment by providing wedding photos to wedding couples and their wedding guests.
Luckily, wedding photography is always in demand since weddings are held once a couple has made it official through marriage vows. Wedding photographers must be creative with their shots since they can’t predict wedding photo ideas that wedding couples will have when they first meet with them (or their wedding planners if they’re hiring one). In the end, wedding photography is all about doing what you love and doing it well enough for people to want/pay for pictures of themselves or loved ones!
Travel is also another big part of being a wedding photographer since wedding photographers travel to wedding venues that wedding photographers advertise on their wedding websites or social media. Traveling is always nice and wedding photographers are almost always guaranteed a wedding if they’re willing to drive! some wedding photographers drive as far as 10 to 14 hours just so the wedding couple will have wedding photos!
Wedding photographers typically spend most of their time at wedding venues while wedding couples are getting ready. The bride and groom, wedding planners, wedding musicians, wedding caterers, and wedding venue staff typically all do their own thing while wedding photographers take pictures of the wedding venue itself and anything that could look nice in a photo as a background for portrait shots of the wedding couple. Wedding photographers also take photos of themselves with wedding couples before the wedding to put on their website or social media. In the end, wedding photography is all about doing what you love and doing it well enough for people to want/pay for pictures of themselves or loved ones!
Weddings can last from 4 to 8 hours or longer. Wedding photographers typically take wedding photos for the wedding couple as wedding couples are walking down the aisle, taking wedding pictures during wedding vows and wedding rings, taking wedding pictures with their parents before the wedding at the wedding venue, and more wedding photography. Wedding photographers also take wedding photos of wedding guests and wedding cake presentations since wedding couples are often so busy with getting ready for the wedding that they can’t possibly catch it all on camera!
The editing process for wedding photographers is one of the most important parts of the wedding. Wedding photographers are editing their photos to make sure they highlight what is important and to remove any distractions in order to keep the main focal points of your favorite photographs clear.
The editing process varies for every wedding photographer, as well as which editing software they use and what their editing style is. The editing style is important because editing photos of the same wedding can have completely different looks. Wedding photographers editing styles usually change with time and experience, but there are some editing standards that most wedding shooters will follow with every photo they take.
My editing process starts after I download my images from my camera’s memory card to my editing software (which is Adobe Photoshop Lightroom). After I download all of my images, I filter out any unusable photos such as dark or blurry photos. Once I get rid of those photos, what’s left are all of the potential masterpieces that could be used in a client’s gallery.
After this initial sorting through, editing each photo becomes more manageable because now it is only about-40 photos rather than over 1,000. I spend the rest of my editing time editing images fully and playing around with exposure, color and white balance to get different effects based on each photo’s elements.
I edit each wedding differently because every wedding has different lighting conditions as well as different locations that are available for photos. Not every editing style will translate over into a specific wedding simply because they are different photographers shooting in different locations with different light sources. Each editing style is usually forged from the same editing process though.
For me, this editing process helps me go through all of my options faster and gives me a clear understanding of what image should be used whereafter it has been edited to fit the style I want for that particular moment in my client’s gallery. This can help a client decide faster what they want to highlight in their album or wall print.
The editing process is extremely important because it shows your style and editing abilities as well as your artistic skills. Wedding photographers who have been editing for years can usually adjust editing styles shortly after starting out so you can get the pictures that you want without making too many changes. Making editing choices means being able to leave the viewer with a certain feeling after looking at one of your images, so choosing an editing style takes some time but once you know what editing style works best for you, then editing becomes less difficult because you will know which adjustments to make on the fly and how much work specific photos need.
I personally find editing very rewarding as I am able to view my work in a way that not everyone can. Couples usually don’t take the time to look through all of my editing pictures because it’s difficult for me to give them the amount of editing photos that I have. After editing, editing photos become a lot easier because you are able to see which ones were good and which ones weren’t so great after editing.
The editing process is fun and rewarding, but also challenging because each wedding is different than the last. Luckily, wedding photographers have been editing since photography was invented, so there are many resources out there for learning how other wedding photographers edit their photos like books or websites dedicated to teaching editing techniques and methods. It will take some time before you can your editing style but patience will eventually pay off because editing is such a large part of what wedding photographers do.
Wedding photographers offer a variety of prints to clients. There are typically three to five packages available, ranging in price and the number of images provided. The least expensive package is usually a DVD or flash drive containing all of the images from the event. Higher-priced options will provide multiples of each image.
Editing weddings can be one of the most important parts of being a wedding photographer. Editing is necessary to organize photos into albums for clients and editing ensures that only high-quality photographs make it into print portfolios later on. Another editing task involves editing out any faces not belonging to those who have purchased prints or licenses giving them rights to distribute the images.
Most wedding photographers make most of their money selling print packages. The editing and print packages are the tasks that make up most of a wedding photographer’s time, but they don’t usually pay full price for editing or printing services. Most editing is done before the wedding to ensure quality prints later on, and editing software like Photoshop can be used to print images at home rather than sending them out. Some photographers even offer editing as part of their package prices; these edits will likely not have as much work put into them as pre-wedding editing does because it has already been paid for by another client.
The lifestyle of a wedding photographer varies depending on where they live and how busy they are planning weddings during the year. Weddings typically only happen once or twice per weekend in any given location, so wedding photographers can expect long hours and plenty of editing.
Some wedding photographers opt to have client meetings at their homes, while others meet in cafes or other public places to remain more flexible. Wedding season is typically the time during which a newlywed couple wants photographs taken, so early spring through late summer is usually the busiest time for wedding photographers. It’s not unusual for a photographer to work ten-hour days up to seven days per week during this busy period.
The editing component of being a wedding photographer can be especially trying because editing software like Photoshop takes hours or days just to complete one photo. Wedding photos are typically edited with more care than editorial pictures because they need to look flawless compared with older prints that may show signs of aging.
Wedding photographers also typically employ assistants to help with editing, printing, organizing photos, and editing. Assistants generally need no artistic background and will perform basic editing tasks like color correction, exposure editing, and cropping images. Wedding season is typically when wedding photographers need their most help from editing assistants, so it’s the busy time for assistant hiring as well.
Every wedding photographer has a different approach to editing pictures during wedding season; some try to edit each photo once before passing it on to an assistant while others might edit one version of every photo themselves and let editing assistants come up with the rest. The goal of editing photos is mostly the same: make all photos look perfect before the client sees them or uses them to design their wedding album.
It’s rare for wedding photographers to edit the same way at every wedding. It’s more typical to meet with a couple before editing begins so they can provide directions or select certain editing styles they prefer. The editing style also depends on the photographer, with some using editing software while others might develop pictures in a dark room or use other special equipment.
How often wedding photographers have time to edit weddings varies depending on their editing schedule and how many assistants are available to help with editing tasks outside of wedding season. Wedding season is usually when wedding photographers need assistants most, but this does not mean that it takes all of their time during busy periods. If they have one assistant editing ten hours per day and three days per week during busy times then that might equal editing for around 32 weddings per month and editing an average of two hours for each wedding.
Few editing assistants edit as much as the wedding photographer decides is necessary, so editing must be done multiple times to ensure color correction and exposure editing are applied evenly across every photo. Exposure editing is particularly important because photos can fade over time, but editing software used by photographers can prevent fading from happening and make photos look brighter than they did before editing them.
Every wedding photographer operates differently however if you think wedding photography is for you the best thing you can do is shadow!
